Shell and its subsidiaries have taken the final investment decision to start the construction of Europe’s largest renewable hydrogen plant, HOLLAND HYDROGEN 1, at the port of Rotterdam, according to FleetMon.
It stated; “The plant will be able to produce 60,000 kg of hydrogen every day once it starts production in 2025.
“The hydrogen will be derived by the process of electrolysis, and a 200MW electrolyzer will be constructed on the Tweede Maasvlakte within the port of Rotterdam. The plant will receive energy for the production process from the Hollandse Kust wind farm, which is partly owned by Shell.
“The renewable hydrogen produced is intended to supply Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam via the HyTransPort Pipeline. Where the renewable hydrogen is to replace the grey hydrogen used in the production of energy products such as petrol, diesel, and jet fuel, which will reduce their overall carbon footprint. There are also hopes that the renewable hydrogen could be routed to decarbonize commercial road transport down the line.”
It added: “The construction of HOLLAND HYDROGEN 1 is a major step by Shell toward realizing its goal of becoming a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050. Shell aims to develop a global hydrogen economy by developing the sector and priming it for growth in production, storage, transport, and delivery of hydrogen to the final customers.”
