The African Energy Chamber (AEC) is proud to announce Saudi Aramco as a Diamond Sponsor for African Energy Week (AEW) 2023, taking place from October 16–20 in Cape Town. As a global leader in the energy industry, Saudi Aramco’s participation underscores its commitment to Africa’s energy sector and its vision for sustainable development, perfectly aligning with AEW’s mission to drive growth, foster innovation, and promote sustainable development across the African continent. The sponsorship reaffirms the importance of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and partnership in addressing the unique challenges and opportunities within Africa’s energy landscape.

Ranking as the world’s second-largest company in terms of revenue in 2022, the Saudi Arabian Oil Group (Saudi Aramco) is a Saudi-based company primarily involved in the production of petroleum and natural gas. As one of the world’s largest integrated energy and chemical companies, it operates across the entire hydrocarbon chain, delivering essential energy resources and generating substantial economic and societal benefits for people and communities worldwide.

With roots spanning over eight decades, Saudi Aramco has emerged as a global energy leader. Renowned for its conventional reserves and advanced technology, the company produces diverse crude oil grades and explores innovative uses, including chemicals and hydrogen production. As a gas production pioneer, the company holds exclusive access to Saudi Arabia’s resources, fueling not only energy but also ammonia, fertilizer, and blue hydrogen production. Daily gas processing capacity has surged from 2 billion to 18 billion standard cubic feet per day since 2000, and cutting-edge technologies like machine learning and UAVs have enhanced productivity and safety by the company.

As a global oil and gas heavyweight, Saudi Aramco offers significant insight and expertise for Africa, and the company is already beginning to make its mark across the continent. Recently, Saudi Aramco, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, and the Emirates National Oil Company, secured bids to supply vital petroleum products to Kenya. The collaborating firms will designate local oil marketers to oversee importation and revenue collection, with payments occurring following the six-month credit period’s conclusion. The initiative simplifies financial operations in Kenya’s energy sector, strengthening the nation’s economic stability and resilience.

In 2019, Saudi Aramco and South Africa’s Central Energy Fund (CEF) partnered to build a $10 billion crude oil refinery and petrochemical facility in Richard’s Bay, South Africa, with a planned daily processing capacity of 300,000 barrels. The facility, which will process various types of crude oil, will comply with South Africa’s clean fuels regulations and European emission standards. The project is expected to reduce reliance on refined product imports in South Africa and enhance Saudi Arabia’s presence in the country’s oil sector.

As Saudi Aramco advances its footprint in Africa, steadfast in its pursuit of heightened efficiency and its commitment to the global energy transition, the continent stands to gain value from its experience and expertise. Saudi Aramco’s extensive expertise in efficient operations, technological innovation, sustainability initiatives, local content development, sound financial management, and strategic partnerships makes it a formidable source of knowledge and inspiration for African energy companies and National Oil Companies. These lessons in excellence, efficiency, and innovation have the potential to revolutionize Africa’s energy landscape, setting it on a path of sustainable growth and development.

In return, Saudi Aramco stands to gain immensely from these strategic partnerships with African nations. Diversification, resource access, market expansion, geopolitical influence, and involvement in sustainability initiatives are among the key advantages that come with these collaborations. It’s a win-win scenario, driving economic growth, technological advancement, and energy security in the region while offering Saudi Aramco unparalleled strategic advantages and access to invaluable resources.

“Saudi Aramco’s remarkable global achievements serve as a testament to its dexterity in the energy industry. As Africa surges forward in its energy evolution, there has never been a more opportune moment for Saudi Aramco to step onto the continent’s stage. The wealth of opportunities that Africa presents, from vast untapped resources to burgeoning markets, align seamlessly with the company’s vision for a sustainable, energy-abundant future,” states NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman, AEC.

As a Diamond Sponsor, Saudi Aramco will play a pivotal role in shaping discussions, sharing insights, and forging connections that will drive Africa’s energy sector forward. AEW 2023 attendees can look forward to engaging with Saudi Aramco’s experts, learning from its experiences, and exploring collaborative opportunities that will contribute to a brighter and more sustainable energy future for Africa.
