SPACES FOR CHANGE|S4C, a non-profit organization working to infuse human rights into social and economic governance processes in Nigeria, has urged the Federal Government to review all cases of unlawful detention, extortion, torture, and human rights abuses committed by any personnel of the police force, including the defunct SARS.
Speaking at the formal presentation of its report – POLICE BRUTALITY, PROTESTS AND SHRINKING CIVIC SPACE IN NIGERIA – in Lagos, Friday, March 19, 2021, Executive Director, Spaces for Change, Victoria Ibezim-Ohaeri, said: “This report looks back on the long history of police violence in Nigeria, tracking how deep-seated grievances unaddressed by the state for decades morphed into spontaneous, peaceful demonstrations against governmental inaction.”
The Director, who said the report was produced with support from Fund for Global Rights, FGHR, added: “This report is based on the findings of a joint fact-finding mission and on-the-spot assessment of the #ENDSARS protests undertaken in seven states in Nigeria by members of the Action Group on Free Civic Space between October and December 2020.”
