OPEC unveils first environment, climate and sustainable development report

. Says energy realities must underpin global sustainability efforts
. Al Ghais: Countries should determine their own energy pathways

The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has launched its first Annual Report on Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development, calling for greater international cooperation in addressing environmental and sustainable development challenges.

The inaugural 2026 edition of the report was launched at the OPEC Secretariat in Vienna, Austria, providing an overview of major environmental and sustainable development issues that have featured prominently in multilateral discussions over the past year.

According to OPEC, the report is intended to improve understanding of the different perspectives surrounding environmental and sustainable development issues and promote convergence towards “pragmatic, effective, inclusive and fair solutions.”

The report noted that climate change and other environmental challenges are closely linked to activities that support human life and economic development.

It therefore argued that sustainability requires environmental protection and human development to be pursued in a mutually supportive manner.

OPEC projected that the global population would increase by about 1.4 billion people to 9.7 billion by 2050, while global economic activity could double in size over the same period.

It said the expected growth in population and economic activity would likely increase the environmental impact of human activities, reinforcing the need for coordinated international action.

The report also acknowledged progress in reducing global emissions and advancing the sustainable development agenda, while stressing that environmental and sustainability challenges require international cooperation.

However, OPEC said such cooperation must take into account global energy realities and the differing circumstances of individual countries.

The report highlighted the role of OPEC and its Member Countries in international environmental and sustainable development discussions, noting that their engagement predates the establishment of several multilateral institutions dedicated to these issues.

In the foreword to the report, OPEC Secretary General, Haitham Al Ghais, said countries should be allowed to determine energy pathways that reflect their individual circumstances.

He said: “The unique circumstances of each country should determine its sustainable future energy pathway. Each country’s approach therefore needs to be understood, respected and supported, provided it contributes its fair share to addressing the respective global challenges.”

The report is expected to provide OPEC’s perspective on the intersection between energy, climate, environmental protection and sustainable development, while contributing to ongoing international discussions on how to balance development needs with environmental objectives.
