The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported the vandalism of Tower 70 along its 330kV Gwagwalada-Katampe Transmission line, resulting in a significant reduction of power supply to Abuja.
In a statement, Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs said that Tower 70 of the 330kV Gwagwalada-Katampe Transmission line was vandalized on the 26th of February, 2024, at approximately 11:32 pm. The incident caused the tower to collapse, severely impacting the power supply infrastructure.

Following the tripping of the Gwagwalada-Katampe Transmission line at Gwagwalada Transmission Substation, TCN operators attempted reclosure which failed, prompting a physical patrol of the line. During the inspection, it was discovered that the four tower footings of Tower 70 were vandalized, leading to the collapse of the tower. This act of vandalism has resulted in a reduction of bulk power supply flexibility and a decrease in power volume into Abuja by 250MW.
TCN has swiftly mobilized to the site of the incident and initiated emergency repairs to the damaged tower and its associated equipment. However, the repair process may take some time, prolonging the period of reduced power supply to Abuja.
In response to the incident, TCN emphasized the importance of vigilance in combating vandalism of power equipment. They urged the public to report any suspicious activities around power infrastructure to security agencies or the nearest TCN offices nationwide.

The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by TCN in maintaining the integrity and reliability of Nigeria’s power grid, highlighting the critical need for enhanced security measures to protect vital infrastructure.
