Prof Omowumi Iledare marks 70th birthday in style

The Executive Director, Emmanuel Egbogah Foundation, Abuja and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, GNPC, Petroleum Professorial Research Chair, University of Cape Coast, Ghana, has marked his 70th birthday in style.

A lecture, which was organised to mark the event took place at the Emerald Energy Institute, University of Port Harcourt, UNIPORT, Nigeria, on September 2, 2021, with Mr. Osten Olorunshola, Director, Fortune Engineering, and Prof. Owunari Georgewill, Vice-Chancellor, UNIPORT, as Keynote Speaker and Special Guest of Honour respectively.

The title of the lecture, which attracted many experts from Nigeria and overseas was, ā€˜Advances in Petroleum and Energy Economics, Policy and Management’, which he has been very passionate about over the years.

While many speakers, including former students, highlighted his numerous contributions, Prof. Iledare said he is committed to making more contributions.

Professor Wumi Iledare (PWI) has over 40 years of technical, professional and academic experience in the economics of the oil and gas industry and the global oil and gas economy. Currently, he serves as Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Petroleum Research Chair in Oil and Gas Studies at the University of Cape Coast, Oil and Gas Institute, Ghana; and Executive Director, Emmanuel Egbogah Foundation for Petroleum Industry Economics and Policy Advocacy, Abuja, Nigeria.

An Emeritus Professor of Petroleum Economics at Louisiana State University, Energy Studies, USA and Director, SPE Africa Region, 2019-2021, PWI is Chirota and Emmanuel Egbogah Distinguished Professor and former Director of Emerald Energy Institute, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria (2013-2019).

An expert in upstream petroleum economics, international petroleum and fiscal systems economics, and geopolitics and economics of oil and gas resources and supply, Iledare, holds a B.Sc. degree in Petroleum Engineering with honors from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria (1979); an M.S. in Energy Resources from the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering (1985); and a Ph.D. in Energy and Mineral Economics from West Virginia University (1990).

He serves on Nigeria National Assembly Technical Advisory Team on Petroleum Industry Reforms to the Joint Committee on Petroleum Industry Bills from 205-2021.

He is a distinguished fellow and the immediate Past President of Nigeria Association for Energy Economics (NAEE, 2015-2019); a Senior Fellow and the 2008 President of United States Association for Energy Economics (USAEE); and the 2014 President of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE).

PWI previously worked as a petroleum/reservoir engineer for Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in Nigeria (1980-1983), and a reservoir/production engineer trainee with Mobil Producing Nigeria (1979-1980), and as an Energy Specialist or California Energy Commission, Sacramento.

He publishes, severally, on upstream oil and gas economics and policy.

He also ranks among the top 500 SCOPUS authors in Nigeria, 2014-2020. He has received several professional awards including NAEE Lifetime Achievement award, Outstanding Contribution to petroleum engineering in information and management discipline in SPE Africa Region; SPE Nigeria Council Best Technical paper presentation; and the IAEE outstanding contribution award to the International Association for Energy Economics.
