The Port of Gothenburg saw 430,000 TEU pass through from January to June 2022, representing a 5 per cent increase in container traffic compared to last year’s levels, according to FleetMon.

It stated: “There have been many components that have contributed to this increase in container volume. One factor is adding a new route to and from the USA through MSC. Another one is the addition of new terminals in the Scandinavian Railway system that led to the Port of Gothenburg establishing connections with over 30 inland terminals throughout Sweden. Container traffic to and from the port by rail has increased by 10%.

Elvir Dzanic, CEO of Gothenburg Port Authority, stated that they have demonstrated their reliability and efficiency to the Swedish Industry despite the successive disruptions in many other ports. Hence it was only logical that their port became the port of choice.

It also maintained that, “Many analysts and even the Swedish Government expect that a recession is imminent. However, Dzanic had a more optimistic outlook on the scenario, stating that according to their order books, no one was budgeting by opting for lower container volumes this year or in the coming year.”
