National Mass Metering Programme: Local prepaid meter producers record 79% underperformance under phase zero

By Eyo Nsima
The National Mass Metering Programme, NMMP has come under threat as the indigenous producers have recorded 79 percent underperformance under phase zero.
They were expected to provide the one million meters under the NMMP in order to enable the Federal Government to boost domestic manufacturing, create more jobs and conserve the nation’s foreign exchange.
But at March 2021, the producers were only able to supply only 13 percent, even though the performance level increased marginally to 210,000 or 21 percent in April 2021.
This means that 790,000 meters are still outstanding, representing an underperformance of 79 percent, meaning that the target would likely be shifted.
Nevertheless, the Managing Director, Mojec Meter Asset Management Company, Chantelle Abdul is said to have put the blame on lack of capacity to rapidly deploy available meters to end-users.
She is said to have also attributed it to the difficulties associated with sourcing the foreign exchange at the official rate for the importation of components.
