Brand new bulk carrier NORDIC NULUUJAAK (IMO 9884966, dwt 95758, built 2021) has been trapped in her maiden voyage from Baffin Bay Canada, to China, according to FleetMon.
It stated: “Brand new bulk carrier NORDIC NULUUJAAK (IMO 9884966, dwt 95758, built 2021) in her maiden voyage from Baffin Bay Canada, to China via Northern Sea Route, with cargo of iron ore, is as of Nov 2, stuck in ice in East Siberian Sea, Arctic.
“There’s nothing unusual and there’s no danger, it’s a typical situation along Northern Sea Route, several other ships nearby are also stuck. They aren’t waiting for Arctic ice to melt; they’re waiting for icebreakers to take them through ice to clean waters. In this case, they’re waiting for nuclear icebreaker VAYGACH.
“Last year was only year in my memory, when Northern Sea Route was free of ice from late Aug up to Nov. This year, Northern Sea Route was never completely free of ice, with ice barriers here and there.
“As of late Oct, it’s impassable without icebreakers. Arctic ice cover is on the increase, it’s already returned to boundaries of median ice edge 1981-2010. Just like scientists predict. Mini ice-age is on the march.”
