MARITIME ACCIDENT: Container ship SHILING in trouble again

Container ship SHILING in trouble again, still in New Zealand waters – the ship issued distress signal at 0827 LT (UTC +12) on May 12, 2023, according to FleetMon.

It stated: “SHILING was disabled and started to drift in NE direction, in rough weather conditions, so at one time Master of the ship even mentioned 24 crew ready to abandon the ship. As of 1600 LT situation stabilized, the crew and ship are safe, offshore tug SKANDI EMERALD (IMO 9447639) is already near SHILING, preparing to take her on tow.

“The ship left Wellington on May 10, bound for Singapore, after a prolonged stay at Wellington, caused by her first mishap, which happened on Apr 15:

“Container ship SHILING arrived at Wellington, NZ, in the morning Apr 14, unmoored and started sailing in the morning Apr 15, but suffered engine failure while navigating in Wellington Harbor, and had to anchor in an emergency at around 0130 LT Apr 15. 2 tugs responded, at around 1340 LT the ship heaved anchor and was taken back to the berth, she was berthed at around 1510 LT. Ship’s next port of call is Napier, she arrived at Wellington from Auckland.”
