Spaces For Change | S4C strongly condemns the explosion on January 16, 2024, at 7:44 pm, in Ibadan, Oyo State, resulting from illegal mining activities. The incident claimed two lives, injured 77 individuals, and caused property damages worth millions of Naira, as reported by credible media sources.

In a statement, Victoria Ibezim-Ohaneri, Executive Director,S4C said the organization emphasizes the detrimental impact of illegal mining on the national economy, contributing to insecurity and widespread displacement in the North West, North Central, and South West geopolitical zones. Spaces For Change | S4C urges a comprehensive investigation into the Ibadan explosion and calls for accountability for those responsible, highlighting the prohibition of illegal mining under Section 2 of the Nigeria Mineral and Mining Act.

Expressing solidarity with the victims, Spaces For Change | S4C acknowledges the efforts of the Oyo State government in covering medical bills for the injured. However, the organization calls on the federal government and relevant agencies to ensure justice for the victims and to enforce regulatory measures on mining operations nationwide.

As the nation grapples with the aftermath of this tragic incident, Spaces For Change | S4C underscores the urgent need for swift succor to the affected individuals and emphasizes the critical role of regulatory bodies in preventing the recurrence of such destructive events.
