Container ship NORTHERN DEMOCRAT interrupted her voyage from Los Angeles to Peru and had to call Posorja, Ecuador, where she anchored on June 9, 2021, and is to remain anchored under quarantine, according to FleetMon.
It stated: “The ship requested medical assistance after one of crew died with from respiratory complications, “probably related to covid”. All the crews were tested and now await test results, no reports on any other crew getting sick or hospitalized (yet).
“Dead seaman is of Filipino nationality. It is reported that ship was bound for Posorja, though according to her AIS previous records, she was sailing to Peru.”
It also stated: “In Los Angeles and nearby Long Beach, California, home of the nation’s largest port complex, a vaccination program that began in mid-May has reached about 500 visiting sailors on 11 container ships as of June 2, 2021.”
“We are on a continuous rotation between six ports in the USA and six ports in Brazil and one in Argentina and Uruguay — a vaccination would help us a lot,” Ingmar Koal, the master on board the container carrier the NORTHERN MAJESTIC (IMO 9252565).
