In a groundbreaking achievement toward environmental sustainability, the NNPC Ltd/TotalEnergies Joint Venture has successfully eliminated routine gas flaring across all its assets, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions in alignment with national and international targets.
In a statement, Olufemi O. Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, heralded the milestone achievement, emphasizing its significance in the context of Nigeria’s commitment to the Paris Accord’s targets. The venture’s attainment of zero routine gas flare across its four leases marks a pivotal step in the nation’s efforts to mitigate climate change impacts.
Soneye stated, “This feat underscores our unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability. By eliminating routine gas flaring, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint but also contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.”
The success was announced during an inspection tour of OML 100 in the South-eastern Niger Delta region, off Port Harcourt, where a joint team from NNPC Ltd and TotalEnergies assessed the progress of the OML Flare Reduction Project initiated in December 2023. The initiative targeted the elimination of the last routine flare volume, approximately 12MMscf/d of gas, resulting in a substantial reduction of 341KtCO₂e/yr in greenhouse gas emissions.
Soneye underscored the venture’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “Our 5R Strategy guides our actions, ensuring that we not only meet operational objectives but also prioritize environmental responsibility.”
The achievement reflects NNPC Ltd’s broader initiative to eliminate routine flaring entirely across its portfolio of assets by 2030 or earlier. Work is underway across all other assets within NNPC Ltd’s Upstream Directorate to ensure alignment with this ambitious goal.
“In pursuit of meeting the targets of 20% (unconditional) and 47% (conditional) greenhouse gas emission reduction as contained in the Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Accord signed by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration, the NNPC Ltd/TotalEnergies Joint Venture has achieved zero routine gas flare in all its assets.” The statement said.
