World’s First Zero-Emission Tugboat demonstrates operational efficiency

Navtek Naval Technologies, a Turkish tugboat designer, reports that its first ZEETUG (Zero-Emission Electric Tugboat), GISAS POWER, has demonstrated its design and operating efficiency over the last year and a half with positive outcomes, according to FleetMon.

It stated: “The ZEETUG GISAS POWER was designed, manufactured, and supplied by Navtek in early 2020. According to the firm, this is the world’s first entirely electric and rechargeable tugboat.

“The vessel is owned by Gisas Shipbuilding Industry, prominent Istanbul-based pilotage, and towage firm.

“Nearly two years after it was delivered, the firm is proud of the consistent success this modern technology has produced.

“The tugboat is maneuvering ships in Turkey’s Tuzla Bay. It has been operating without incident for over a year now.

“Following the supply of the first ZEETUG (32T BP) last year, Navtek registered three subsequent tugboat contracts with the Gisas Shipbuilding Industry that included two sister vessels (ZEETUG30) and one 45T BP ZEETUG, all of which are scheduled to arrive by the end of 2021.”

It also stated: “According to Navtek, the effectiveness of the ZEETUG GISAS POWER is gaining attention from stakeholders who want to lower emissions associated with harbor towage and have witnessed the first ZEETUG maneuvering ships in Tuzla Bay, one among Turkey’s busiest shipbuilding and repair regions, which welcomes dozens of vessels each day.

“Navtek reports the ZEETUG tugs are equipped with strong electrically charged battery packs and quick-charge stations (QCS) that can fully recharge a ZEETUG in just one hour. This has allowed the tugs to perform daily heavy-duty day and night operations effortlessly.

“This new technology, according to Navtek, is suitable for use on any existing short-distance vessels, including ferries and coastal fishing boats as well as recreational vessels.

“In comparison to similar tugs powered by diesel engines, the ZEETUG cuts down on around 9 tonnes of NOx and 210 tonnes of CO2. Thanks to its rechargeable battery and fully electric zero-emission motor, coupled with reduced noise and vibration levels, ZEETUG embodies the next wave of green technology.

“The tugboat’s unique design enables them to operate at a greater rate of efficiency while minimizing environmental impact. Navatek plans on exploring the possibility of expanding its zero-emissions solution to include alternative green fuels like hydrogen.”
