NLC: Trades Union Congress Ghana writes Federal Government on brutalized Ajaero

By Eyo Nsima

Trades Union Congress (Ghana) has urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to investigate and sanction those behind the ‘abduction and torture’ of Comrade Joseph Ajaero, the President of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, in Imo State, Nigeria.

In a statement obtained by The Daily, www.thedaily-ng.com, the Secretary General, TUC, Ghana, Dr. Yah Baah, stated: “The attention of the Leadership of Trade Union Congress (Ghana) has been drawn to the abduction and detention of Comrade Joseph Ajaero, the President of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, in Imo State in Nigeria.

“We have already made contact with the leadership of NLC. It has been confirmed that Comrade Ajaero was not only abducted by the authorities in Imo State but he was also severely brutalized and tortured. His photos indicated clearly that his right eye is swollen and completely closed.

“We are happy to know that Comrade Ajaero was released yesterday by his captors (i.e. Imo State Police) and he is currently in hospital receiving medical care. This was confirmed by the General Secretary, NLC, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja in a telephone conversation with the Secretary General, TUC, Ghana, Dr. Yah Baah.

“The Trade Union Congress (Ghana) calls on the Federal Government of Nigeria to investigate these brutalities meted out to Comrade Ajaero and punish the perpetrators in accordance with the law.

“Nigeria is a civilized country and the most powerful country in the West African region. Such atrocities against Trade Union leaders and union activists should not be condoned.”

He added: “We at the TUC (Ghana) will support our comrades in NLC in whatsoever action they will take to ensure that the authorities in Imo State account for these brutalities against Comrade Ajaero and other Union leaders in Nigeria.”
