MARITIME: DP World Australia Forced to Halt Terminals After Cybersecurity Incident

By Our Correspondent

DP World, one of the largest terminal operators in Australia, recently had to suspend all terminal operations due to a cybersecurity incident, according to FleetMon.

It stated: “The company revealed that this action was taken to prioritize the safety of both its customers and employees.

“In communication with the Australian media, DP World disclosed that it is actively engaging the services of various cybersecurity experts and informing relevant authorities as part of its ongoing efforts to investigate the full extent of the breach. The company has confirmed that its teams are diligently working to contain the damage resulting from the cyber attack.

“The breach was initially detected on November 10th, leading to the suspension of operations at DP World’s terminals in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Fremantle since that date.

“Responsible for managing 40% of goods entering and leaving Australia, DP World had to disconnect all its ports from the internet in response to the attack. Consequently, trucks were unable to transport containers to and from the affected sites.

“Visitors to the company’s website encountered warning messages, such as “Checking if the site connection is secure” and “dpworld.com needs to review the security of your connection before proceeding.” However, the public sections of the site remained accessible.

“Darren Goldie, Cyber Security Coordinator for the Australian government, has reported that significant progress is being made in restoring the affected sites, and they are expected to be back online within a matter of days. Goldie added that the government has not yet identified the perpetrators of the attack.
