Africa50 partners Madagascar to hold General Shareholders Meeting in Antananarivo

Africa50 will host its annual General Shareholders Meeting 2024 (GSM) in Antananarivo on 19 September in partnership with the Government of Madagascar. The major international gathering will bring together global leaders, investors, policymakers, and infrastructure experts to collaborate on the action required to finance a sustainable future for Africa.

The event will be held under the high patronage of H.E. Andry Rajoelina, President of the Republic of Madagascar, who will officially open the GSM. Mr. Alain Ebobissé, CEO, Africa50, will launch the landmark event with an opening address, followed by a keynote address from Dr. Akinwumi A Adesina, President of the African Development Bank and Africa50 Board Chairman. Key themes unpacked throughout the one day event will include catalytic capital, public-private partnerships, and strategies to stimulate the adoption of clean cooking solutions.

During a session entitled, ‘Innovative Financing Solutions for Africa’s Energy Transition’ policymakers and business leaders will discuss how to increase investment and project development for renewable energy projects, providing a roadmap to harnessing Africa’s renewable energy potential. The session will analyse emerging financial instruments such as carbon credits, green bonds and blended finance to accelerate Africa’s green growth and scale up the delivery of game-changing infrastructure.

Madagascar’s tremendous solar and hydropower potential positions the Southern African nation as a prime location for infrastructure investment in renewable energy, along with attractive opportunities in agricultural exports, special economic zones (SEZs) and critical minerals such as cobalt and nickel for electric vehicles (EVs). Africa50’s GSM in Antananarivo will be a unique opportunity for Madagascar to leverage its abundant natural resources to global and local investors as the country’s strategic location and rapidly growing population underscore the need for bankable projects across strategic sectors including renewable energy, logistics, agriculture, and sustainable mining.

The event will include a panel discussion on ‘The Role of Natural Gas in the Energy Transition including Clean Cooking Fuel’, calling for Africa’s shift to the widespread uptake of cleaner cooking solutions, reducing reliance on harmful energy sources such as charcoal, kerosene and wood which are used by more than 900 million people in Africa. The programme will highlight the vital role of gas as a transition fuel for the continent’s journey towards sustainable energy use that significantly reduces carbon emissions, improves public health and lowers the impact of deforestation. The conference will unveil new partnerships and announcements that drive investor action across various sectors and geographies.

Featuring perspectives from the private sector, the programme will outline innovative pathways to plug Africa’s infrastructure finance gap. The forum will include networking opportunities with industry leaders, roundtable discussions, and presentations of investible opportunities that span across multiple sub-sectors of infrastructure, bringing together local and global investors to catalyse a new era for infrastructure development in emerging economies across Africa.
